Engine 309 was placed in service on September 27, 1927, in a new house built for them at 1851 East 48th street in the Flatlands section of Brooklyn. This part of the city was mostly farmlands and was not developed until the early 1920's. Engines 255 and 257 first served this area. Engine 309's first apparatus was a used 1919 American LaFrance 700-gpm pumper from Engine 21.

Ladder 159 was added to the quarters on January 1st, 1947. Their first rig was a used 1934 Walters 75 foot aerial. Ladder 159's area includes many single-family homes, apartment buildings, retail stores, King's Plaza shopping mall and the Gateway National Recreation Area. They are second due to the Rockaways in Queens over the Marine Parkway Bridge, a distance of more than four miles.

Today, both companies are in Division 15, Battalion 33. Engine 309 operates with a 2004 Seagrave pumper and Ladder 159 operates with a 1999 Seagrave 75 foot tower ladder.

Stewball was given to us in October of 2003 by somebody who worked for the phone company claiming they "found" him and hoped we could give him a good home. We accepted on a trial period and learned that it's easier to train one dog rather than fifty guys. Since we first got him, Stewie has put on about twenty pounds making it harder for him to go on all the runs.

Aside from being a food hog, Stewie is also a glory hog, accepting all of the praise from visiting classes, and grabbing all of the spotlight in the media, as he's appeared in several newspapers.

Since then he's become a permanent fixture in the firehouse, even claiming the Door seat on the Engine. So far he's got more seniority than most of the house (though he counts in dog years).

Fun Fact #3

WHY YOU GET BUCKETED...
Although it's fun to hit someone from the roof with 5 gallons of water, the real reason is to get you into the habit of looking up before enterinig a building.

Fun Fact #4

Back in the old days, the dogs used to nip at the horses legs to get them to run faster.

Fun Fact #6

WHY ARE FIRETRUCKS RED...
Originally red was the cheapest color of paint.

PICKUP TRUCK POND
A guy parked his pickup truck outside the firehouse and returned from vacation to find that the back of his truck was filled with water, 300 goldfish, plants and rocks. After laughing, he went to empty them out before driving home but his girlfriend felt badly about killing the fish and insisted that they keep them, sloshing all the way home. Only two of the 300 survived and he named them 309 and 159.

CHICKEN CUTLET SPONGE
We were trying to play a trick on a guy by cutting a sponge into the shape of a chicken cutlet, breading and frying it. We put it in with all of the other cutlets in hopes of disguising it, and by luck of the draw, the captain got it.
